The
StarLab Summer Program is a six-week program
designed to encourage under-represented
minorities to consider pursuing careers in
the public health sciences. Annually the
program targets between 40-50 junior high
and high school students enrolled in
metro-Atlanta schools. The program is
conducted in collaboration with the National
Organization for the Advancement of Black
Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBBChE),
the Association of Minority Health
Professions Schools (AMHPS) and
scientists from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC).
During the program, students are exposed to
laboratory demonstrations, and hands-on
laboratory experiments on selected topics in
chemistry, biology, medical technology and
engineering. In additions, students are able
to network/interact with minority scientists
from local colleges, agencies and
laboratories. In addition to completing
laboratory demonstrations, students are
placed in groups where they conduct a
laboratory experiments. The culminating
event for the program is a group
presentation on the findings from their
laboratory research.
